Hi Janet, I think what you are talking about is alerts. When you are in the list of conversations and touch one, you can flick to Hide alerts. If you double-tap, you won't be notified when you get a message from that person or group. You can use the same procedure to stop muting their alerts by flicking to Unhide Alerts and double-tapping.
