First of all, I don’t think you can compare a self-driving car with an
appliance. First of all, the self-driving car does not yet exist and probably
it won’t exist for a while yet. I know others will argue this and some think
that us blind folk will all be able to jump into our self-driving car in a few
years and go where we want to go, but that is even further in the future. There
has been some pretty big jumps in this technology and they hinted at this
technology coming sooner than we might have thought, but a number of recent set
backs where people got killed in cars with semi-autonomous capabilities make it
very clear that there are huge hurdles yet to overcome and even when the first
truly self-driving car will be available it will probably still mean a
qualified driver with a license will have to sit behind the wheel. Anyways, I
stray from the topic of accessible appliances.

To me an appliance with a truly accessible app is accessible. I think what GE
has done by putting regular analogue knobs on these stoves for the cooktop is
very smart since I think even many sighted people appreciate the familiarity
and easy adjustability of such controls and as I said, cooking on a cook top
requires often quick and frequent adjustments unlike baking or broiling or
whatever. If I do a turkey I preheat my oven at the required temperature, then
I put in my turkey and that’s it. Same goes for baking a cake, sure maybe some
things require you to turn the heat up or down a bit for a period towards the
end, but if that can be done in an accessible app or by asking Alexa then that
is OK for me. Internet outages nowadays are pretty much just as rare as power
outages and unless I have a gas range my range won’t work during a power outage
either just as my WiFi.

Thanks, Kimberley, for confirming your model, I guess yours is a gas model
which I am not interested in since my kitchen is not set up for it and in any
case, I really want that induction cook top, it’s almost twice as efficient as
even gas is and once your remove a pot it’s barely hot enough to burn yourself,
right after you take it off it’s hot for a minute or so, but it cools off super
fast since the heat is not provided by an element in the cook top but it is
transferred into your pot or fry pan by magnetism so it’s whatever you use to
cook in which gets hot not the cooktop itself. I actually now found a 995
induction model, in addition to the 985 model it has a double oven which is
also nice.
MSRP in Canadian Dollars is $4,299 for the 985 model with the single oven and
$4,699 for the 995 model with the double oven.
My local store where GE is sold will call me today to let me know what they can
do with respect to price. The owner used to e the manager of our Sears outlet
before Sears went down the drain here in Canada and she then opened her own
independent furniture and appliance store. I expect she’ll give me at least a
somewhat better price, she doesn’t usually have these high-end models in stock
anyways and it’s the same for me in my retail store, if I have to order some
expensive item for a customer which I don’t have to carry in inventory and it’s
basically sold already I am always willing to give a better price for it.

Best regards,
Sieghard

I agree with this 100%. I fear that makers of self driving cars will assume
that if they create an accessible iPhone app, that will constitute access to
the car. In the unlikely event of the phone dies, what would happen then?

You could but it would be less convenient.

We just bought a GE range with WIFI and Alexa connectivity and it seems to be
working pretty well for me. The model we have is part of the Cafe line which
also has washers, driers, dish washers and microwaves. I have no experience
with any appliance except the range, but so far my experience has been
positive. I suggest starting your search with the Cafe line. Also feel free to
reach out privately for more indepth information if this is something you are
seriously considering as these appliances are rather pricey.

I am on a similar search but for a range (cooktop/oven). I gave up a couple of
years ago regarding an accessible, connected washer/dryer and bought a Miele
set which is all buttons as in actual buttons you can feel although there are
still options to select on a screen, but some of those are things you don't
really need, sometimes an app like Seeing AI can pick it up and for those times
when I actually have to use it and still need more help I just call Aira, Be My
Eyes or my Mom using Facetime. For the most part my wife takes care of it, it's
just once a year or so when she goes back to the Philippines for a few weeks
when I have to use it independently.

I have come to realize that it does not seem like there is a range which will
be fully accessible, I have seen some which have WiFi, but so far I have only
ever read that you can only control the oven. Anyhow, I could see how it would
also be pretty inconvenient if you cook and you want to quickly turn the
temperature of a burner up or down a bit when you are busy doing other stuff ,
maybe your hands are dirty etc. This would not be a good time where you have to
unlock your phone and fiddle around with an app, in such as case the only thing
which would make sense is if you could Alexa/Google Home and give a quick voice
command which would be carried out instantly.

One thing I did notice on the GE website was that they are talking about "ADA
compliance" and one of our local stores actually send me an email after I asked
them to look into something with analogue controls and said that some companies
mentioned they had braille overlays for the touch screen. I plan to call GE
tomorrow (if they are open) or Tuesday and hopefully find out a bit more. Their
ranges actually get some pretty good reviews, so I definitely would like to
chat with them.

I am always amazed that given the number of government organisations in
existence as well as all the private advocacy groups and people that nobody has
done more to work with the major appliance makers to find a better solution. I
bet nowadays a lot of these appliances run some sort of version of Android and
it might not take all that much to make them talk on their own.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Hello:

Has anyone used or tested the accessibility of the LG, Samsung or GE apps with
WIFI enabled washer and driers? We are in the market to purchasing a new washer
and drier and hoping to find something that is accessible with using the Apps
given that most of the washers and driers these days have touch screens.

Thank you,
