Richard, With a bit more playing, and reworking of my page, I discovered that the svg image I had apparently was having other issues as well. It was just a test image anyway, so I grabbed a gif and that is working just fine.
In fact I have setup an image gallery with a bunch of gifs just to test it out and it seems to be workig now (at least after I fixed the typos in my html). And no the webpage is inside our corporate firewall. I am preparing to do some VoiceOver and JAWS training for our QA teams, and just needed some fun test pages to have them try the screenreaders.
