I thought that was how to do it, but it wasn't working. Not only that, but it wasn't switching from tabletop to screen away mode. I found a really good apple screen input guide on Applevis, the link to which I will post at the end of this message. Somehow, orientation had gotten locked, and it was locked in some kind of truly messed up state, with all the dots in truly wrong places. I did a three-finger swipe down, it unlocked orientation, and things are back to normal now. Who knows. This guide has several things in it I never knew.
