Sieghard, Are you saying the guy who makes the digital caliper has an app that makes it accessible? I have a client who needs those kinds of tools and I had not come across such an animal.
I will have him check out his web site. They also make, I think, talking kitchen scales and canes. The link will take you to their website which includes a manual for the product. As for size, the Cobalt at least is not really all that much larger than a large carpenters tape, I guess it is larger if you compare the length of the tape since a similar sized quality tape which is non-talking probably has at least a 25 foot tape and not only a 15 foot tape and you can get 15 foot tapes which are more compact, but they also have a narrower, less rigid tape. The point is that you can’t make a tape with tactile markings which gives you 1/16 inch accuracy, the click rule or Rotomatic is different since it’s tactile in a way down to the half inch or 1 cm on the metric unit, but then the 1/16 or 1mm accuracy is achieved through the “clicks” on the click rule. These are achieved by a spring-loaded pin producing an audible click which you can also feel as you push the threaded rod in or out of the housing and the pin clicks in place in each thread. With the Rotomatic the same is accomplished by turning the stop along the threaded rod, each full, 360 degree turn is 1/16, a half turn is 1/32 and a quarter turn is 1/64. Each unit has a lock screw so you can lock the measurement you selected into place after you set it up, they are very ingenious devices, extremely precise and very durable. I typically use my click rule for doing “real” woodworking as in building furniture, drawers, Shaker-style doors as you often find on kitchen cabinets etc. Here real precision at least to the sixteenth of an inch is necessary. If it’s more carpentry oriented like doing baseboard, door or window trim, framing interior walls or if it involves measurements more than 5 or 6 feet long I usually use the talking tape measure. For very small measurements and machine setup like setting the table saw at a certain distance from the blade and if said distance is no more than 3 to 6 inches I often use my setup blocks/bars which I described. Those are especially handy for cutting say 2 ½, 2 ¾ or 3 inch wide strips of hardwood for the rails and stiles on a panel door like a raised panel or Shaker-style cabinet door. I just use the 1/2/3 inch block which is 3 inches long, 2 inches wide and 1 inch thick, if I want 3 inches I use it as is in the proper direction, if I want 2 ½ inches I use it the other way and add a ½ inch block, if I want 2 ¾ inches I use the 2 inch side and a ¾ inch block etc. My 15-block set goes down to a very thin 1/32 inch block, then it has a 1/6 inch block, a 3/32 inch, an 1/8 inch etc. I can use a combination of blocks to make up just about anything I want. There are also digital measuring devices such as digital calipers or angle blocks which are available with Bluetooth and where you can then use the iPhone to obtain a spoken value. Barry Wixey from Wixey Tools<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wixey.com%2F&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cd9b73c97edfe4aca03f508d73ea388ae%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637046744401311862&sdata=s2yTC1omx3hqAPmVvOaRmMxWR5%2BiXQsPJ1AacqdjJ9Q%3D&reserved=0> offers a digital Bluetooth angle cube and he also has a table saw fence setup which when properly installed shows the distance from the fence to the blade on a display. He is currently working on a Bluetooth module which would then send the information to his app where it would be spoken. Hi, What is a Tape King? and funny this comes up as I’d just recently been discussing with a friend how amazed I am that no one ever produced a retractable metal tape measure with tactile markings sort of like the talking one but without the large housing necessary for its talking component more like those people in trades use. I apologize for straying off topic. I’ll be quiet now. Take good care. Robin From: Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Friday, September 20, 2019 11:42 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com<mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com> Subject: RE: accessible measuring app? I have been doing woodworking for 20 years and I absolutely agree that a Click Rule or talking tape measure are absolutely essential if you want to do stuff with any degree of accuracy. There is also the Rotomatic (not sure if I spell this correctly), it is somewhat the same concept as a Click Rule, but I believe instead of pulling out a threaded rod which then makes a click every sixteenth of an inch the Rotomatic works by the user turning a stop along a threaded rod and it can give you accuracy down to a 1/64 of an inch whereas the imperial click rule is accurate to 1/16 of an inch and the metric click rule is accurate to 1mm which is better than a sixteenth, but not quite as good a 1/32. Having said this, 1/16 is adequate in a lot of situations and 1mm is of course even better. The Cobalt talking tape measure if set to imperial is also accurate to 1/16 and if set to metric it is 1mm. I like the fact that you can include the length of the housing in your measurement if, for example, you want to measure the inside of a cabinet or drawer, you can also measure something and push a button to add that measurement to memory, then measure the next item and add it and so on and in the end push a button to get a total. This can be handy if you do things like baseboard trim, they usually come in 16 foot length so I could go and measure several walls and add up each measurement until I get close to 16 feet and this way I can minimize waste. The Cobalt can also be set to read out in inches, feet and inches, e.g. 25 inches or 2 feet 1 inches, on the metric side you can do metres, centimetres or millimeters, e.g. 1 metre and 10 centimetres can also be read as 110 centimetres or 1,010 millimetres. I assume that Tape King can maybe do the same, but I don’t know. Max, could you contact me off-list as I’d love to learn more about Tape King. I have both a couple of Cobalt tape measures, I have I think 4 imperial click rules and 1 metric because when I am really working on a larger project I often will use 2 or 3 at the same time, e.g. if I want to measure how far away from the edge of a sheet of plywood the rail of my track saw is especially if I am cutting along the 8 foot length of the plywood, it is much better to have a click rule on each end than to run around with a single one. There is absolutely no way an app is going to be accurate enough for any sort of good woodworking and I highly doubt you would see a single professional and sighted woodworker use an app like the Measure app over a tape measure even though they could probably use it with much better precision in terms of lining up start and end point. The fact is that if you want to do any sort of woodworking it will be an expensive hobby. Lastly, don’t forget the usefulness of setup blocks/bars like these: 15 piece setup bar set<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.chipsfly.com%2Fproduct%2F12-235.html&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cd9b73c97edfe4aca03f508d73ea388ae%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637046744401321867&sdata=kHronX%2FRcJF1rSX9ycT7Zn9QY0gMx9%2F4EME5jycGs4U%3D&reserved=0> This 15-piece set is one of the most complete and best I have found, I also have a couple of smaller 5 or 6 piece ones which you can get in metric or imperial and if I know I want to rip a 2 inch strip off something on my table saw or I want to set the height on my router bit to half an inch than using the appropriate setup bar is way easier than trying to set the table saw fence with the click rule. A knurled locking knob is screwed into the top of the threaded rod through a long slot that has been machined into the tube. [closeup of someone using the Click Rule to measure a board] The Click Rule As the threaded rod is extended into and out of the tube, a clicking sound can be heard at 1/16-inch intervals. The threaded rod has raised threads every 1/2 inch. The metal tube has two flat rectangular stops or fences mounted on it. One stop or fence is located precisely at the open end of the tube and the raised thread rod protrudes through it. The other stop or fence is positioned exactly six inches along the tube from the stop at the open end of the tube.
