Hi, There are a couple ways to get where you need to get. My personal favorite is when you touch the app store icon, do not double tap. Flick up to Show controls, then double tap. You will find options here for redeeming gift cards, updating, and searching. Double tap on update. Then it will be a ways down the screen, but at some point you will still want to also do the three finger swipe down on this screen to update the list of apps that have updates.
The other method, if you open the app store, you would then look for the my account button, and double tap that, and then do the three finger swipe down to refresh the list. As an aside, if you want to search, if you use the first method and open the show controls on the app store icon, and double tap on search, the keyboard will appear since the search box is already editing.
