When you want it you turn the figurative knob, i.e. you make a sort of turning gesture with two fingers on the screen a bit apart, you can turn clockwise or counter-clockwise. If you don't want to change anything in the rotor, don't turn it.

Hi Carolyn, the rotor is a way to choose how to navigate. Pretend there's a knob between two fingers and twist the knob left or right to move through the choices. When you find the one you want, flick up or down to move backward or forward by that element. So to move by headings, you would turn the rotor to headings and then flick down to go to the next one or up to go to the previous one.
