I think this is relevant on this list since we are still talking Apple TV and
comparisons.

I don't think that Sanyo Mich provided a link for is a smart TV, typically a
smart TV is one which has internet connectivity and uses the Android operating
system, it probably has things like Netflix and YouTube preinstalled, but you
can also install other apps on it.
If you are fairly invested in the Apple ecosystem I still think an Apple TV is
a pretty good item to have and you have accessible apps for Netflix, Disney
Plus (which, by the way is fantastic), YouTube and Amazon Prime Video.
There is also the new Apple TV service which we have not yet subscribed to and
you can also subscribe to the Canadian Crave TV streaming service which offers
content from HBO, Showtime and Starz.
If you have a cable TV subscription you can get the Crave subscription through
your provider or you can subscribe independently on www.Crave.ca/subscribe.
It's $9.95 a month for the basic offering, if you want all the newest HBO
content and on-demand you can buy an add-on package for another $9.95 a months
(you are now at $19.90) and if you want the additional Showtime package that is
an extra $5.95, total package would be $25.85 a month so that is getting a bit
on the expensive side.
If you add Netflix for $13.99 a month here in Canada and subscribe to Disney
Plus annually ($89.99) you would be looking at $48.34 and if you also throw in
Apple TV Plus with an annual subscription which works out to $5/mnth I think
then you are at $53.34, you'll also pay applicable taxes on Crave and I think
also on Disney Plus and Apple TV Plus (only Netflix somehow gets away with not
charging Canadian taxes) so in the end if you are in BC you would pay close to
$60 a month for all that content. Oh, and I forget, there is also CBC Gem which
gives you access to all the CBC programming and I think it's $4 or so a month.
But still that isn't actually all that bad considering that a decent cable
package can easily cost you the same and more if you want a premium package.
We have Amazon Prime anyways so we can access their movies, but unfortunately
it seems there is little described content here in Canada, mostly we watch
Netflix and Disney Plus which, as I said, for me is a great service since I
like a lot of their older movies and musicals like Iron Will which we just
watched last night (it has audio description), some of the other Christmas
oriented movies and so on.

Of course an Apple TV is also an Airplay device, gives you access to Apple
Music and acts as a hub for many home automation devices which support Home Kit.

I think we are at a point where often a single device does not do it all and
whenever we buy a new TV I would most likely buy a smart TV with built-in
Chromecast even though we have our Apple TV also.
For now my old 40 inch Sony LCD TV I bought 12 years ago still works great, it
was on the higher end of TV's back then costing $1,600 and it does 1080P but of
course it's not a 4K TV and has a huge frame/bezel compared to TV's nowadays.
Now the newer 55 inch and 65 inch TV's are coming down in price so much that I
think it's almost time to upgrade, but most likely we'll wait another year or 2
or 3 since we have some other projecgts higher up on the list such as
rebuilding and expanding our deck, maybe a greenhouse since both my wife and I
enjoy gardening etc.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Subject: An off list question re purchasing a smart tv

Hi I am interested in purchasing a smart tv.
Is there A particular make or model that would be accessible to someone with no
vision or is the Apple Tv a better option.
Feel free to email me off list with input.
Thanks.
Jen
