Here are two tips that will make using WhatsApp nicer for you if you're a VoiceOver screenreader user (as opposed to a VoiceOver magnification user).

1. On the Settings tab, go to Notifications, and turn off in-app notifications. This will stop your phone from buzzing, beeping, and speaking while you're using the application.

2. In iOS Settings, go to Accessibility, VoiceOver, then turn off the item that automatically describes images. This will stop WhatsApp saying something every time a new voice message plays.

Update.
I thought I was signed in but I wasn't. Once I signed in the download started
just fine.
I haven't paid much attention to posts about What's App since I wasn't using
it, but maybe I should have read those posts! I'll see soon enough.
