I've got loads of bard books. My next phone whatever it will be is going to be at least a 256 gig model. I've got about 86 gigs worth of bard books and at least 20 gigs worth of various books and things on voice dream reader. I really do like my iPhone 8 and I haven't noticed it getting any slower. I took Richard's suggestions and did turn off a couple battery saving things. I also just listened to a couple episodes of apple viz podcasts on my google home which was very cool.
