Hi,

I could be wrong but I somehow suspect that a thermometer might not be returnable being deemed a personal health item if not before this virus business then definitely afterwards.

And how lovely of Mary to help her friend that way though were it me I'd just let her keep the thermometer especially if it were an under the tongue one.

I have one of the talking infrared scanning ones. I got it ages ago from the Speak to Me Catalog. Not sure if they're even open let alone have stock but it's a neat thing that runs on 2 triple a batteries and can either be used in ear or on forehead.

Are all of the ones mentioned with apps under the tongue or scanning type ones? I'm frankly surprised the Exergen thermometer which is heavily advertised typically in Winter doesn't make a talking one or have an app linked thermometer.

Stay well and take good care everybody.

Robin

If you can get one from amazon, their return policy is quite good, so if Seeing AI, or Voice Dream Scanner, couldn’t read the numbers and there was no app, you could return it.

Thanks, Richard. I wonder if Seeing AI or another app could read the numbers on the digital display? I realize  you don’t know this, just thinking out loud. Thanks for all that you share on this list. I appreciate your knowledge and having the benefit of what you share.

Well, you learn something every day.

I’ve not heard of any that talk, but a quick check at Amazon got quite a few ranging in price from $60ish to over $200.

The kind of thermometer that does not touch the skin – forehead thermometers that are held very slightly away from the forehead and scanned across it.

Thanks for all of this timely conversation about Bluetooth thermometers.

I'm not sure what you mean by noncontact.

But, anyone looking for a thermometer right now is just going to have to keep looking until they find a supplier that still has some.

Definitely not the time to share an under-the-tongue thermometer these days if multiple people in your household are using  it. I guess you could disinfect it each time somebody used it, but the contactless thermometers are definitely a better option right now and probably even if there weren’t a COVID-19 virus, after all, if you think you have a fever you probably want to avoid giving whatever causes it to anybody else. Of course that is not an issue if you are only 1 person who uses it.

Good to know.

The Kinsa is an under the tongue thermometer.  At least, the older model I have is and I’m pretty sure the Bluetooth one is as well.

I’ll keep this info for reference though.  Sounds excellent.

There is also the “Thermo” from Nokia Health formerly Withings.

Below are links, first to the Withings website directly, then to the Canadian Apple, Amazon and Best Buy, after that the US Apple Store, Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart. Finally I put the links for the Thermo app on both the Canadian and US App Stores. The only problem is that it seems you are not going to be able to find one since they show as sold out everywhere or, in the case of Amazon, as “currently unavailable”, I guess that is probably a result of COVID-19.

I haven’t checked, but that may very well be the case for the Kinsa thermometer as well.

The Thermo, by the way, connects via WiFi, not Bluetooth. we have had ours for probably 3 years or a bit longer and I hadn’t used it until recently for about 2 years because just before Christmas 2017 was the only and last time I was sick with the flu and a fever in probably 10 years.

I did use it a bit more often recently just checking myself since I do have a retail store and am out in public every day. I realized I hadn’t even connected it yet to my iPhone 8 which I got a year and a half ago, but as before the connection was easy and quick and after signing in to the app with my user name and password my wife’s and my own profiles showed up and I could still see the measurements I took back in 2017.

The Thermo also has a display where a sighted person can instantly read the result, otherwise you can get the result inside the app about 15 or so seconds after the reading is complete.

There is one single button. You press it once and the thermometer makes a small vibration which means it’s ready. You have to be a little bit quick and have it ready pointing to the middle of your forehead about half an inch or so away from your skin since the measuring starts right away after the vibration and only lasts for about 4 or 5 seconds.

It reads the temperature contactless, as soon as it vibrates you smoothly move it from the middle of your forehead to your temple and stop there, the Thermo will vibrate twice to indicate it has finished the reading.

After you do this a few times you quickly get the hang of how fast you have to move it across your forehead so you get to your temple just before the second double vibration.

Even if you take a reading without the Thermo app open you soon get a notification that a new temperature reading is available, if you double tap on that notification the app opens and shows the profiles you have set up.

In our case it shows “Me” which is me and it shows “Jackie” which is my wife. Above that it then shows an unassigned reading, if you double tap on that Voiceover reads out the date, time and the temperature and you can then double tap on whichever profile you want to assign that reading to. It’s very accessible, very simple and reliable.

After you are done you just put on the soft silicon cover and the Thermo will turn itself off, if you want to take a second reading you just press the button again and repeat. You can take 2 or 3 readings one after another and if you do this you’ll see in the app that it will say that there are 2, 3 or however many readings you took which are unassigned, you can tap on each one and assign it or if they are all from yourself you can tap on “Select All” and assign them all to your profile at once. In the same way you can also delete any of the readings you took or delete them all at once.

Lastly, the Thermo app will transfer data to the Apple Health app if you set this up and give the permission.

I think there was a fairly extensive discussion recently, probably on this list, about accessible thermometers. I have one, so I did not pay very much attention. A friend of mine unfortunately got the virus. So I lent her my thermometer, since she lives alone and didn’t have a talking thermometer. So now I am on the hunt for an accessible one. I think at some point richard had mentioned a Kinsey or Kenzie something like that, that was supposed to be accessible. But I can’t remember the spelling. I thought I had the app on my phone, but can’t find it. Any ideas?
