Thank you so much! Siri did the trick this time; previously I tried asking her to open the notification center and she said she couldn’t do that. This does work!

You just double tap the assistive touch button then double tap notifications. Alternatively, you can ask seri to open notifications or to show you your notifications and it will read them to you. I am not sure if you can do things like clear them using this method. Someone else from the list might be able to tell you a way to change the notifications gesture as some have done for the sliding up gesture for home and the app switcher.
