I've attended two meetings where break out rooms wer eused. Perhaps it has something to do with how the host handles the set up, in one meeting I did indeed need to do nothing. In the other Voice over read out that I had been assigned to break out room one and had to tap the button to join the room.
I've found that going to the home screen solves the problem of having voice over reading incoming messages etc. while allowing me to open the app switcher and return to the Zoom screen quickly if I do need to interact or check something. I haven't been able to use it on the Mac and after my first experience when I was unable to stop the chat feed being read out I must admit I haven't tried very hard.
