There are keyboard commands for navigating an iOS device. I’d recommend setting 
the Voiceover modifier to Capslock, and maybe teaching him Quick navigation 
with the arrow keys first, for less finger use. You can set things in Settings 
> accessibility > keyboard to help too. Note that you don’t /have/ to have a 
Magic keyboard.
