Yes, iMessages are unique to Apple, and so logically, SMS is regular text messages as it has been around since texting began. That is a good example of how influential Apple has become.
Personally, since not everyone owns Apple products, I’d never turn off SMS, but there are situations where SMS cost people as much as 25¢ Per text, which can get very pricy fast as much as people are texting these days. I’m glad my provider doesn’t charge for texting. Some still do.
