This still works for me. I was able to touch a message within a conversation and with the rotor on actions, flick down to more, double tap then choose forward, put my email address in the to field and hit send just like with any other text message. The email came to my junk folder with nothing in the subject line from my num...@tmomail.net. as I am with TMobile. Alternatively, you could send an email that I would get as a text message if you emailed my num...@tmomail.net. I don’t think you have to have an email account on your phone to do this but your Carrier must support this function.
