It shouldn't.
But, the QWERTY equivalent key might be different on the braille edge.
What do you hear when you press space+dots7,2?

If nothing, temporarily change the typing feedback for hardware keyboards to 
characters and try again.
I don't know if the braille edge manual has a list of qwerty commands.

Richard, I too have wondered how to put a new line in a text message. I'm using 
a BrailleEdge 40 and tried your suggestion but it didn't work. Does it matter 
if I'm writing in contracted or uncontracted braille?
