You would see the backup of your phone during a restore of the phone or the 
setup of a new device on the same ID. So if you went to Settings, General Reset 
and chose to erase all data and settings,you would then need to setup the 
device again. During this process you should have the option to restore it from 
the iCloud backup. I am just giving you an example of when you would use the 
backup, not suggesting you do it :)
