Ok, never mind. I did some more digging and found some instructions that are apparently more complete than the ones I found before. The first set I found didn't do the whole job.
If you go into settings, multitasking and doc, and multitasking then you can turn off all the options in there and the split view/slide features are completely turned off.
After doing this and checking some apps it turns out that some of the difficulties I have been having were because of this feature. I was apparently activating apps without intending to.

I have searched this out and found some instructions but they don't work completely. Maybe it can't be done or something.
I want to turn off split view completely so that when I open an app it is the only thing displayed on the screen. Maybe I am just old and can't adjust but I'd rather have my Ipad act like my iphone SE.
I got it partly turned off using some instructions I found by googling but some apps still go into split view when I open them.
Can I turn it off completely?
