I have to agree, And comments I’ve heard on the mini is that it has a crap battery life,
I can’t confirm that but have heard it more than once. Having said this, it really depends on what phone you have now, I really thing anybody who has an iPhone XR and later is wasting their money upgrading, the 12-series phones will be remembered similarly to the iPhone 5C, 7 and iPhone X, definitely updates, but not updates worthwhile unless you pay big bucks to be on one of these programs where you can get the latest each year. Yes, the 12 Mini is relatively small and it packs the latest chip, 5G and so on, but considering that most likely next year's phones will have betrter 5G modems, possible feature both Touch Id and Face Id and so on makes me want to wait for sure.
