Hello Richard,

If only it were that simple. This CNet articles gives a quick breakdown on what
one would need to make a “dumb” bike smarter:
https://www.cnet.com/health/diy-peloton-bike-how-to-build-your-own-smart-cycle/

There are gadgets that measure power output and that can measure distance along
with heart rate, but as always the question for us is what’s accessible.

Simon’s response was helpful in letting me know that Wahoo’s platform and
products are more or less accessible for example.

One can go all out to try to replicate the Peloton experience, but I just
really want access to my workout stats.

exercise bike

I would think that the phone in your pocket would track your steps if you
enabled that in the health app, or a pedometer app.

And, doesn't the Fitbit track heart rate if you do not want the Apple Watch?

Just some thoughts.

Richard

"You know," said Arthur, "it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon
airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxiation in deep
space, that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was
young."

"Why, what did she tell you?"

"I don't know, I didn't listen."

Hello list,

So as the subject line states, I’d like to make my “dumb” exercise bike
smarter. I’ve poked around online and there appear to be lots of resources on
this topic since I like a lot of other folks don’t’ feel like shelling out the
big bucks for a peloton along with the subscription.

I’ve got a 15 year old Schwinn recumbent bike that is still holding strong and
am not looking to upgrade as long as it’s still working. Even then, I think I’d
be more inclined to buying a more traditional bike for when I next upgrade
instead of something that’s Internet connected where with any sort of app or
firmware update, it can become inaccessible just like that.

Anyway, getting to my question, has anyone tackled this dumb bike/smart bike
project? Can they recommend any iOS accessible tools to get for measuring heart
rate, speed, distance etc.? I’m not an Apple watch owner and have no desire to
get one and would be perfectly fine with a stand-alone heart rate monitor. My
understanding is that Wahoo fitness stuff is the way to go to get connected,
but again and as always, what’s accessible for us? iOS app/service?

Thanks,

Cristobal
