They completely cover your ears. The ear cups are padded and your ear fits inside them so the pads are touching your head around your ears, not on your ears. I suppose if someone had extraordinarily large ears they might press on them... The ear pieces are made of metal and are approximately 4 inches tall and 3.5 inches wide and the metal part is almost an inch thick, then the padded piece is about 3/4 inches thick. The band that goes over your head is made up of two metal bars that have a nice mesh between them that sits on your head and distributes the weight so they do not feel that heavy on your head, though when you hold them, they are surprisingly heavy. The adjustment for the earpieces is also metal and seems to hold the position you set it at quite well. You really have to have them in your hands to fully appreciate them, but I hope that helps.
