I agree with Christopher. If I'm remembering correctly, the focus issue with the native Mail app started with some iteration of iOS 13. I started using Outlook for iOS then and am so glad I did. It doesn’t have the focus issues and I've used Outlook on my Windows desktop for years. I suggest you try Outlook for iOS. It's free so trying it is easy and you can decide whether the native Mail app is still preferable. I open the native Mail app from time to time to see if it's any better but quickly return to Outlook for iOS.
