It is basically the same at least it was when I last used the S1 app before upgrading all my old Connect and Connect:Amp devices to either Sonos Amp or Port devices. I assume that as time goes by there maybe features in the S2 controller which don't exist in the S1 controller because the older hardware doesn't support them, but I think for now it's very similar. Of course you do have to be sure that all your Sonos speakers are S2 compatible.
