Try adding a contact for them in your contacts list. If the Birthdate field isn’t there, there is a button to add fields. Add the birthdate field. And enter their birth date, which will include the year.
Make sure that in your Settings, Calendar, the birthday calendar is selected so it will show; don’t make it the default of course, but make sure it will show up. Then, I believe you will get what you are looking for.
