If you are talking about plugging headphones in that have a 3.5 MM jack and the iPhone only has the lightning ort, it is called an adapter, 3.5 to lightning that Amazon probably sells, but it is probably about the same $10 through Apple and you could be sure you are getting the right one.
Your friend should check the settings under audio or maybe it is under hearing, there is a place where you can adjust the balance between left and right. IF they got into that area accidentally, they could have changed it so it was out of balance. There are so many hundreds of headphones options no one on this list can tell you what to buy. You need to decide if you want wireless, wired, or what and whether you want in-ear or over the ear, and how much you want to spend as you can spend anywhere from probably $10 to $550.
