I have had similar problems with the bard app, and my local talking book 
library provided the following advice, which has worked every time.

maybe it will help you, too.

1.        Close BARD Mobile
2.        Open the Settings app on your iPhone
3.        Choose BARD Mobile
4.        Toggle on “Setting Initialization”
5.        Open BARD Mobile again
6.        Agree to the terms of use
7.        Re-enter your username and password
