Those of us who have been using an iDevice for years have learned that from time to time, VoiceOver starts mispronouncing certain words for unexplained reasons. Whether a word is mispronounced or not is a function of the particular word and synthesizer being used. I'm using Samantha enhanced and can confirm I'm getting the same pronunciation of smelly you are. And even though VoiceOver spoke that word as Shelly, it was spelled s m e l l y.
