I would check the issue of 3G going away. Does your phone support 4G? If so, you probably are fine sitting tight with what you have.
If it only supports 3G, then check with your carrier as to when 3G support will stop. Otherwise, only upgrade when there are new features you want, or because of the battery life, etc. It is around $50 US to get a new battery in most iPhones...
