That could be difficult for those of us with large big toes, I wonder how you could limit the jumping between the little toe?
Or could it be you have to tape or glue the phone to the sole of your shoe for it to count the number of steps your taking? LOL. Check the pedometer reading. Later, see if you can take a ride in a vehicle on something very close to that same path and check the readings before and after. My thought is, if it is truly measuring steps, it should not give you much after riding in a vehicle. Besides, the keyboard business would only possibly be if one had an apple watch; but I doubt very much that would register typing unless you are a very dramatic typist, 😊. If the phone is in a pocket, I could see tapping one’s foot registering as steps. That happens with some cheap standard pedometers you hang on a belt.
