Richard suggested doing the following let us know if it works for you. Once you have read your messages and are back in your inbox, do not exit mail, but return to your home page. Once on your home page, bring up the App Switcher and then exit Mail.
When you then launch Mail, are you in a message then or your inbox? I agree it’s an annoying issue!
