Well, guess what, friends, my notifications, at least for emails, do not work
with screen locked. I have mine set for never, so keep it locked most of the
time.

The one major bug I’m dealing with and don’t recall reading about in the
AppleVis write-up is that when the phone is unlocked, notifications are silent.
I don’t know if for sighted people the banner comes up, but with VoiceOver at
least, you are left oblivious as to any sort of incoming notification. In my
case, I deal with time sensitive emails so it was turning into a bigtime
annoyance for me. I thought it might have to do with the new focus settings in
iOS 15, but after monkeying around with that for a while and other settings
like having VoiceOver speak notifications, nothing changed.

I finally called Apple Accessibility on Friday after the work week was done and
explained my issue. Turns out, it’s a known bug and they’re “workig on it.” Not
much Solace since that pretty much means wait till iOS 15.1 comes out.

Anyway, he documented my call and bug report. He said the more people contact
them about it, the better. So… get on it people and bug Apple about it if
you’re experiencing this too.

If the phone’s locked or even if I’m on a phone call, the notifications do come
in. It’s just when it’s unlocked and in use that there is no sound whatsoever.
Again, no idea if the banners are still popping up, but even with VoiceOver set
to speak incoming notifications, it doesn’t’ help.

Other than that, can’t say iOS 15 has been otherwise buggy for me.

I find that iOS 15 has very few bugs or at least very few serious bugs. I have
an iPhone 11 so I don't know if other hardware has different issues, but I have
no problems with the wallet, no issues with the share sheet and I just fixed
the app switcher problem where flicking left sometimes doesn't say which app
you are on by turning off Reduced Motion, this can be found in Voiceover
Settings > Motion

how cool is that! I hope you enjoy your new phone. A friend of mine told me not
to get it yet because all the bugs need to be ironed out in 15. I want to get
the new phone that is labeled as Pro Max. Esther

OK< a completely misleading subject line, but Santa Claus came
yesterday cleverly disguised as a UPS delivery person with my iPhone 13 Pro,
Sierra Blue, 256GB.

(For those who do not get the reference of the subject line, I will
post a link to a Wikipedia article at the end of this email.)

Yes, UPS made good on the text Saturday morning letting me know that my
package would be delivered today, not Monday.

We had just helped a friend setup her new iPhone 12 Pro with the
wireless data transfer from her old 6S, so I was sure my experience would be
similar…

You know what happens when you assume?...

After 2 hours and a couple of failed attempts, I called Apple
Accessibility.

I got a wonderful woman named Regina, who was more than happy to sit
with us through this process. Of course, it failed for her too. Then, she had
us reboot both my SE 2020 and the new iPhone 13 pro and this time, the process
went very smoothly. I was afraid I would have to truly start from scratch, but
it went much faster and got everything trasnferred over.

I think the fancy new screen may make a little difference in swiping.
It is quite responsive, but that could also be just the new chip.

I bought an inexpensive ESR clear case for it, which fits very nicely.
The case came with a surprise; a stand. It is like the decrotive plate
holders, a plastic V with knotches near the end of each half and it hinges at
one end and when you spread the sides open, the phone sits at a nice angle in
landscape mode.

I’m listing the observations/opinions in no particular order below.

The Sound. Well, I was expecting better sound. I was not expecting
this quality of sound. When in that little stand that came with the case,
sitting at my desk about 2 feet in front of the phone, the stereo separation is
very clear and the sound quality is quite impressive.

Now, my SE 2020 I got last year, had significantly better sound than
the SE first generation and of course, had the stereo if you had your nose
about on the display. The 13 Pro sounds way better than the SE second
generation. Bigger, clearer, and while the phone is only slightly longer than
the SE second generation, the separation is noticeably better.

I never heard the 11 or 12 pro, so maybe they are as good, but I’m
quite impressed.

Setting up Face ID was very easy. VoiceOver walks you through the
setup with good directions. Best yet, at the end of the setup, it lets you
know that the requires attention is turned off for VoiceOver users but you can
turn it on if you wish. I wouldn’t do that. That requires very specific focus
rather than just some of your face being seen by the camera. It makes
unlocking the phone quite fast.

I won’t guess at battery life for at least a week after I’ve used it a
fair amount.

My wife wathced a video on inserting the Nano SIM from my SE 2020 into
the 13 Pro because she could not get it to fit. It goes in upside down from
the way it was in the SE 2020. Then, it works fine. I am on Xfinity, and I
could make calls, receive calls, etc., once the Sim was in and I rebooted to
make sure.

I will call them later to see if they need anything like the IMEI
number, etc.

I’m having a few issues with mBraille but that is probably me getting
used to the larger screen, but I’m not sure yet.

I used Super LIDAR from SuperSense briefly this morning. Very
promising. One thing it does that might be nice for low-vision/blind going
somewhere on their own, if it sees a person without a mask, it will tell you
“person without a mask.”

I think I’d want a lanyard, harness, something that would make it so I
don’t have to hold the phone pointed ahead of me to use that feature, or any
other LIDAR feature.

I have some settings to still go through and some apps to log into
again, but so far, I really like the phone a lot and know I won’t need or want
another phone for several years.

Now, if you don’t know about Virginia, read the article at Wikipedia:
