It is not very clear. When you first double tap to add a contact to your favorites, it opens up their various contact methods that can be added to your favorites. I If you want the phone number, double tap on call and if they have more than one number, you will have a chance to pick the one you want. There is no confirmation. Just hit done or back, whichever is available.
Then, go into the phone and select the favorites tab and that person should be on the bottom of the list.
