Tom, as Les pointed out "verify with side button" means pressing it twice quickly, this is also how you confirm buying an app in the App Store and then once you do this make sure you sort of look at the phone as it will then verify with Face Id. You can, by the way, double click the side button in a store which bring up Wallet, then do the verification before you hold it up to the card terminal which I find a bit easier than holding it up to the card reader so Wallet comes up and to verify then.
