Hello Diane, As far as I understand it, you can only assign a name to people and not animals.
I only have photos of people here so I can’t verify that this is the case. When you open a photo and press the Info button try exploring the screen. If there are people in the photo then as you swipe through you should hear something like “Unnamed Person”. If you double tap here you can assign a name to the person. I’m not sure whether your cat will be identified in that way. If I can obtain a photo with an animal in it I will check for certain.
