Hi Julian,

I suspect you hit the nail right on the head. In my example about the
identically named dictionary apps, they are from different developers so I have
little doubt that the sighted world distinguishes them based on their icon
pictures. We need to continuously lobby Apple and the iOS developers to provide
a way for Voiceover users to name apps other than using the weak element
labeling with the two-finger double tap.

Thanks to those who commented on this thread.

I think that using the two finger double tap and hold gesture to label elements
is at best a poorly fitted Band-Aid. That feature was primarily intended to
label buttons that were not properly labeled, in other words, not meant to be
used for the purpose of renaming the app icons. What I think needs to happen,
is that VoiceOver needs to be taught how to recognize the app icon and give us
the ability to label it that way so that the changes will stick. For sighted
people, the way they would tell the two dictionary's apart is by looking at the
icon. Since we as blind people cannot do this, voiceover needs to come in and
give us an official way of relabeling the icon.

It is probable that the iCon is the same under the hood for both dictionaries.

I think this may be an app developer issue, but it may also be a VoiceOVer
issue.

I’d bring it up with Apple Accessibility. I know of no work around.

Subject: App naming and inability to change to more suitable name

Hi List,

I believe iOS needs some improvement regarding how apps are named and allowing
the user to change them to more suitable names. I don’t know if this is an iOS
or Voiceover limitation. I have two apps, a free Dictionary app and a Merriam
Webster dictionary app both of which iOS in its infinite wisdom names
Dictionary. When I attempt to label the Webster Dictionary app by two finger
double tapping and holding to change the label element from Dictionary to
Webster, the label is renamed back to Dictionary when I reboot my iPhone 13
Mini. Are others getting this same behavior? If someone knows of another method
I should be using to provide a different app name, I’d love to hear it.

Thanks in advance for your help.
