Then just get a Zoleo and an unlimited plan and you can text all you want via satellite. The nice thing with Zoleo is that if you use the Zoleo app on your iPhone and have a Zoleo satellite communicator connected via Bluetooth that if you do have cellular or Wi-Fi coverage the message is sent that way except it may come from the dedicated phone number you get when you activate a Zoleo, only if you have neither Wi-Fi nor cellular coverage will the message go via satellite. Keep in mind it is text only, no pictures, no voice. Also keep in mind that if the big one hits it probably won't matter because all of these devices don't do you much good if the electricity is out and you can't recharge them.

Secondly, the feature will most certainly require an additional subscription because while they mention this may give devices like the Garmin Inreach a run for their money, a Garmin Inreach (the cheapest costs $529.99 Canadian ($399.99 US) requires a monthly subscription which then allows the user to send simple text messages via satellite as well as to send out an emergency SOS which goes to the International Emergency Rescue Coordination Center. From there a local search and rescue group is deployed if necessary. There are less expensive devices like the Zoleo Satellite Communicator which costs $269.99 here in Canada, I assume maybe $199.99 in the US, but still the subscription plans are all similar starting around $15 US or so a month ($19.99 Canadian) for a basic plan where every message you sent costs money all the way up to $49.99 or so ($70 Canadian) which gives you unlimited messages. Both with the Inreach Mini or the Zoleo you are better off using your smart phone to compose the messages, both can pair to your phone via Bluetooth so you can type on the phone and just sent via the device. The Zoleo in fact only has two buttons on the device itself, one sends a preprogrammed "I'm OK" message and the other sends the emergency SOS which will activate search and rescue to the location where the device is located. Garmin has much more expensive devices such as the Montana 700I which is a full-fletched GPS with touch screen which also includes Inreach functionality and since it has a touch screen you can text directly from the device with an on-screen keyboard like on the iPhone, but this guy is $$979.99 Canadian, probably about $749.99 or so US. Both Inreach and Zoleo by the way use the Iridium satellite network, another one is Globalstar, it is used by the "Spot" family of devices which include an asset tracker (a little device you can attach to a car, snowmobile, side by side or other vehicle and which tracks its location) as well as similar 2-way satellite messenger devices to the Inreach and Zoleo. In fact, the Spot X is like a little Blackberry with an actual small physical keyboard on it, but it's not nearly as popular at least here in northern BC because the further north one goes in Canada (or Alaska) the worse is Globalstar which has their satellites all over the equator. Nonetheless I think it would be great if ultimately the iPhone and also Android phones could communicate via satellite and then customers who needed this functionality could simply subscribe to whatever plan Apple chooses to offer. Whether this will replace dedicated devices, however, is also questionable because devices like the Inreach Mini or Zoleo work for days or weeks on a single charge and we all know how long the iPhone battery lasts and if somebody is out on a 10 day hike or hunt one would have to carry an awful lot of external batteries and/or solar charges to make sure you don't run out of juice. Still it would be a great option for people who go out for a day or who often drive in remote areas without cell connection where they can easily charge their iPhone in a vehicle.
