Several people have said that if you search for it in the app store, double tap on the name, not the open button, in there is an update button.
Write Apple Accessibility about the app updates in the app store. For me, it has been the case for along time that I need to do the three finger swipe down after touching toward the bottom of the screen where it says personalized recommendations. Then do the three finger swipe down until you hear VoiceOver saying Refreshing Content. Yesterday morning the app store icon says there were 4 updates. When I opened the updates page and touched where it said personalized recommendations and did the three finger swipe down, there were now 11 updates. So even when it shows you some updates, refreshing the content sometimes reveals more available. I've tried refreshing the screen with a 3-finger swipe up (or is it swipe down, I can never remember). Nothing happens. I think they need to fix it. -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list.
