probably best to have it in the front pocket; but I believe it uses distance traveled not just motion, so carrying it in a bag shouldn't matter.
In health, select the browse tab, and then the profile button in the very top. Fill out all the information. You can opt to share it or not. I think after you have the profile filled out, and selected what you want for notifications, the summary should include activity at the bottom of the screen which will include steps.
