Check in settings Face ID and Passcode that the setting under the Attention heading says: Require Attention for Face ID, off If that is on, you have to be looking at the phone in a precise way. It is more flexible when it is off. I have never mastered the use of facial recognition. I was able to follow the directions given to set up face ID fine. The problem I continue to have  is how to hold my phone up to my face  so that my fade is recognized.
