The iPhone XR is pronounced iPhone 10R, the "x" simply was used by Apple back
then as it is the roman numeral for "10".
And yes, the XR can run iOS 17, it was released in 2018 as the budget model at
the time along with the iPhone XS and XS Max which were the higher-end models.
Anything from 2017 like the iPhone X, 8 and 8 Plus and of course earlier will
not get iOS 17.
Whether you want to upgrade or not is entirely your decision, but if you are
still perfectly happy with your iPhone XR then I would wait until next year
when iOS 18 comes out which your iPhone XR most likely won't support.

When i purchased my current phone, it was called the XR. At some point, i’m
assuming, it was renamed the 10, and i think this means it will accept 17 with
no problem. It still seems to be working well (Knock on wood) and so i’m
assuming there’s no good reason to replace it. Do others agree? Thanks. Penny

That is correct, 8/8 Plus will stay on iOS 16. They were released in 2017 so if
you bought it then and have been using it for the last 6 years then you did
well and getting an iPhone 15 Pro will be a fantastic upgrade you'll really
enjoy.

So if I understand correctly, my current 8 Plus will not take iOS 17. Is that
correct.
Will probably go for the 15 Pro soon.
