Are you raising it to within a foot or maybe a foot and a half from your head? There is a proximity sensor that kicks in when it gets close to your body, or if you cover the upper portion of the screen, which renders the screen useless until you move it away or uncover the upper area.

From time to time when I try to use my phone I raise the phone and no voice over.  I press the side button 3 times to turn voice over off and then 3 times to turn voice over on.  When I turn vo on I feel the haptics but no speech.  When I turn VO off the haptics go away but no matter what I do no speech returns until I power the phone off and then back on.  When I turn the phone on I can’t wait very long before I log in or I won’t have any speech.  Any ideas or thoughts?  I’m thinking it is a phone issue and will have to replace, hope not!
