I did not know that, or if I did I forgot. Sorry I gave people the wrong
impression in the message below. Prior to knowing this great tidbit, I would
flick up or down to get to next or previous widget and double tap. I’d then
have to retouch the widget to hear the new information. With your suggestion
below, you’re right, this has got to be as easy as it is for a sighted person.
I’ll need to consider if I want to use more stacks now. Thanks a ton for the
correction and the information.

I do not know if you know, but you can just move from widget to widget in a
stack by doing a 3 finger swipe up or down. Can not imagine a sighted person
could do it quicker than that.

person as it is for a sighted person, so it’s not going to work for everyone.
That’s why I like the smart stack, since it shows me the widget it thinks I
want to see at that moment. It’s more right than wrong.

I also still use the today page. For example, since I don’t need to see the
status of my batteries as frequently as other things, I just leave that on my
today page. We have a lot of flexibility now on IOS, so each person needs to
experiment to see what works for them.

Thanks Chris,
I had figured out some of that, but the stack information is very helpful.
A tip: it is quicker to get to the various choices of widget sizes and so on by
doing a three finger swipe from right to left. As if you were flicking a page
in a physical book. And of course, to go back, three finger swipe left to
right.

I may experiment with stacks once I decide what I want quick access to.

Thanks again,

Subject: Re: Apps and Widgets

You can have a widget on any of your home screens. I personally have a widget
stack on the first screen of my home pages, and I have a second stack on the
second screen.

First, before adding a widget, you need to know the different sizes and how
much of the home screen each one will take up. Keep in mind, the smaller the
widget, the less information it can display. there are 3 sizes, they are:

1, small, covers a two by two grid on the home screen.
2, Medium, covers a four by two grid on home screen.
3, Large, covers a four by four grid on home screen.

Now, how to add a widget.

1, On the screen you want to add a widget, flick up on any app and choose edit.
2, In the top left of the screen double tap the add button.
3, Swipe down the list of widgets and choose the app you want to add a widget
from. Please note: The first in the list are just recommendations, I would
swipe on down until you get to where the alphabetical order list starts.
4, After double tapping on the app you want, you are put on the screen where
you can find all of the widgets offered by that app.
5, Its best if you start at the bottom of the widget screen, so do a four
finger single tap near the bottom to jump there.
6, The last thing on the screen is the close button. Now swipe up to the left
until you get to the pages. This is how many different widgets you can choose
from. Now if you swipe one more time up to the left, you will get a
description of the first widget and its size.
6, If you want to see what else is available, or do not want the first choice,
then flick down to the pages, and flick up until it changes to the next number.
Then swipe back up to the description and check it out along with the size.
Keep repeating this until you find the type of widget you want.
7, Once you find the widget you want, just swipe down and choose the add widget
button near the bottom of the screen.
8, This should add your widget to the home screen, just hit the done button at
the top to get out of edit mode.

A stack of widgets.

If you want more than one widget, the best thing to do is create a widget
stack. This will conserve realistate on your home screen. Here is how I
create or add widgets as a stack.

After placing your first widget where you want it. Now it is time to add one
to it to create a stack.

1, To make things easier and to keep things from getting confusing, go to your
last home screen.
2, Start edit mode, go pick out your next widget, and add it to your last home
screen.
3, After it has been added, it is just like moving an app. flick up on the
widget and choose drag.
3, Go to your first widget, flick up and choose add to stack. This will place
that widget on top of the first widget and create a widget stack.
4, To add more widgets, just repeat the process.

IN a widget stack, how to switch from one to another?

With the widget stack in focus:
Do a 3 finger swipe up to go to the next widget, and a 3 finger down to go to
the previous widget.

I try to add widgets to a stack in the orer I want them, to make it quicker to
find the one I want.

I use widgets on a daily basis, and it can make finding out information a lot
quicker and without having to open the app.

Do they have to be on the home page?
I got the Weather Widget info which had 6 pages.
Double tapping on any of those did nothing.
There was a done button, but no widget showed up.

You can also get into edit mode by just flicking down once and double tapping.

I have the weather widget in a stacked widget, and I hear “74 degrees, cloudy,
high of 74 degrees, low of 64 degrees” when I touch the app, so I think Mario
is right, and that’s what you need.

I’m also wondering what you get when you turn on badges in the notifications
for the weather app.

HI Jim,
If I remember correctly widgets were an option we could have on or turned off
when we first set up our iPhones. If that’s something you want back such as the
weather widget, then try the following.
Double tap twice and hold on the second tap and you will hear couple of tones
and VoiceOver will announce “start Editing.” Scroll to the top and you will
find an option to add a widget. Double tap on that and you will see a list of
widgets you can add and one of those is the weather widget. That should give
you a good start.

Subject: Apps and Widgets

Good afternoon,
I have an inquiry, so please bear with me, because I’m uncertain about some
things.
When I received a new work iPhone, one thing I noticed was that when I’d put my
finger on the Weather app, it would not just say “Weather”, but it would also
give me the location and other information, such as temperatures and whether or
not rain was expected. My own personal phone doesn’t do that when I touch the
weather app. I have to go into it and then read about my location and
temperature and such. Much more swiping.
I’d love to be able to have my weather app speak those things on my personal
iPhone as well.
It’s the same with the calendar app on my work iPhone. I’ll touch it, and it
will give me the date, and then I swipe to the right, and it lets me know if I
have any appointments or events.
I’ve looked at things like settings in both apps, which really didn’t do me
much good. Then, someone asked if I had widgets on my screen for these apps,
and I had no idea what that meant. So, I thought I’d ask.

  1. What’s a widget?
  2. How can I make the weather app or widget speak my location’s temperature
and relevant information by just simply touching it without actually getting
into it?
  3. How can I get my calendar to automatically let me know if I have any
appointments or events without always getting into it?
If these things are being done on my Work iPhone, which is a 12, I would
imagine they can be done on a 15 Pro.
Thanks for any information.
I’m also going to see if there are any AppleVis tutorials on whatever widgets
are.
Jim
