What I think is that originally the new owners thought that they would have 
enough new subscribers to keep it going, and that is why they originally stated 
that current owners did not have to subscribe.  But now that a year has past, 
they did not get as many new subscribers as they planned, so in order to keep 
it going, they are having to make everybody subscribe, even those owners that 
existed when they bought the company.  

One thing to keep in mind is that the Mac version has always been a 
subscription, and that price is $60 a year.  If I remember correctly, Winston 
set that price when it was released.  All the owners are now doing is including 
the iOS app within that subscription.  So now for $60, you get both the iOS and 
Mac versions.

I do think Voice Dream is worth the subscription, especially if you are someone 
that uses it all the time.  I will say that there has been a lot of updates 
over the last year.  So the new owners are not just letting it sit and stay as 
it was when they got it.  The only thing is, I do wish they would give you an 
option to pay by the month.
