Hi Dennis, They can just submit the update with previous functionality removed, see if Apple approves it, and if they don't approve it, the dev can just put back the functionality and resubmit it. I don't think this is an issue where the developer would need to consult a lawyer. There's no risk to them in just trying it out and see if Apple approves it.
The guidelines are pretty clear to me, Apple says to please not disable previously purchased functionality. However, I think what might happen is the app will just fly under the radar if Apple's review team doesn't notice or doesn't think it's a huge deal. It's entirely possible Voice Dream's developers will be able to push this through regardless of what the guidelines on that page state.
