I just read through the page with the new policy. I’m not a lawyer, but I am not sure it is that different than before, they are just being forced to be more up front with the fact that if you are using a third party service through or with your Sonos, they may have to share your information in order to make that happen. If I authorize my Amazon Music account on Sonos, I would have expected some information sharing between Sonos and Amazon.
The same with Apple Music, TuneIn etc. I for one, will not be losing any sleep over this. That is until something goes wrong, 😉 I have too much money invested in their system to just drop them and spend a bunch more money for another system, which likely won’t have any better security. Yes, we could have the entire house wired but we looked into that before deciding on Sonos. It would cost as much or more than what we’ve have spent on Sonos products. At this point, I can deal with the app as of the June 4th update; when I accidentally updated it. I believe more updates are coming later this month that may improve the VoiceOver access even more. If they really are going to sell your data, you need to know about it and make a decision about whether you want to keep using the product of a company which first did a really bad redesign and destroyed Accessibility, second maybe going to sell your data to whoever. Sonos’ new privacy policy implies the company now sells your data 9to5Mac / Ryan Christoffel <https://9to5mac.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2024/05/sonos-app.jpg?quality=82&strip=all&w=1600> Sonos is probably wishing its only controversy was an app redesign <https://9to5mac.com/2024/05/09/sonos-app-courage/> . Today the company is receiving a lot of heat for a revision to its privacy policy that introduced a major policy reversal with the removal of a single line. New policy quietly introduces major change In his latest YouTube video <https://youtu.be/WwFIIeV4sdw?si=vqeKfINzn-dg91Hu> , Louis Rossmann brings attention to the recently revised Sonos privacy policy, highlighting a disturbing omission compared to the previous policy. The previous privacy policy contained the important line, “Sonos does not and will not sell personal information about our customers.” Here is the former privacy policy <https://www.sonos.com/en-us/legal/privacy-2023?cjdata=MXxOfDB8WXww&utm_source=Vox+Media&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=cj-5040886&source=cj&cjevent=93ec15ee2a6111ef806ed9c10a82b820#legal-privacy-types-info-container> : Sonos does not and will not sell personal information about our customers. However, certain data practices described throughout this Privacy Statement may constitute a “sale” or “sharing” of data under California and/or other US state laws. See the below CA Addendum for more information applicable to CA residents. We want you to understand that information about our customers is an important part of our business. We only disclose your data as described in this Statement And now, the updated policy <https://www.sonos.com/en-us/legal/privacy?cjdata=MXxOfDB8WXww&utm_source=Vox+Media&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=cj-5040886&source=cj&cjevent=01608b882a6211ef83ad084d0a82b821#legal-privacy-2024-share-info-container> : Certain data practices described throughout this Privacy Statement may constitute a “sale” or “sharing” of data under California and/or other US state laws. See the below CA Addendum for more information applicable to CA residents. We want you to understand that information about our customers is an important part of our business. We only disclose your data as described in this Statement 9to5Mac’s Take Sonos has yet to comment on the policy change, but its users deserve an answer ASAP. If the company is, indeed, now selling its users’ personal information, that decision should be detailed with extreme clarity so customers can decide for themselves whether to continue using Sonos products.
