I take it all back.

I am clueless.

I did create a shortcut that if I ran it from Shortcuts would work.

But I have totally failed on getting the Triple Tap the back of the phone to
launch that, or any other shortcut.

I must be doing something in the wrong order, but this is clearly why I have
never used them, even though I have several in their from various apps.

Thanks for trying, but there is something with associating a working shortcut
with the gesture that I just don't get.

Later,

Wow! that is very different than what I see when tapping on either double or
triple tap. Maybe another person using a 16 of some kind other than the e can
help.

On my 16 pro, when I am in the VoiceOver Commands list, Touch, the last pair

Back Tap is the last heading in the Touch settings.

I double tap Triple Tap and get a huge list of things, none of which have
anything to do with shortcuts.

It starts with a heading titled, Interaction.

Under that are things like Activate, escape,Magic tap, and so on.

Other headings are Basic navigation, Text navigation, Advanced Navigation,
Editting, Rotor,Scrolling, Speech and audio, Output, Braille, VoiceOver,
System, and finally, Other.

I'm clearly missing something.

This is why I have not used shortcuts…

Well, on my 16E I tap on double tap and then I see a long list of shortcuts and
actions. I found the set silent mode shortcut I created way down in that list.
If you are not seeing shortcuts and actions then I am not sure why.

did you turn backtap on prior to choosing either double or triple?

As I said to Malcom, I'm not finding that.
I did create the shortcut, maybe I didn't do something with the shortcut I
should have?
I can tell Siri to run the shortcut and it does, but short of putting it on the
home screen, using the triple back tap seems like a better idea.

You go to accessibility then to touch then to backtap then tap on either double
or triple tap which ever you prefer. In there you can determine which shortcut
to associate with the tapping. It has to be a shortcut you have already
defined or is a already established shortcut.

I hope this is clear enough.

Yep, I was able to follow the instructions and then I associated it with a
triple backtap and now I can turn silent mode on and off that way.

I guess I just need to start using copilot more. :)

This is what it said. You will have to try it to see if it actually works.

Yes, you can create a shortcut on your iPhone to toggle silent mode. Here's
how you can do it:

   1. Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone.
   2. Tap the + button to create a new shortcut.
   3. Tap Add Action.
   4. Search for Set Silent Mode and select it.
   5. Tap the word Turn to reveal a drop-down menu and select Toggle. This
will allow the shortcut to switch between turning silent mode on and off.

Once you've created the shortcut, you can add it to your home screen
or use Siri to activate it. This way, you can easily toggle silent
mode without having to use the physical switch on your iPhone

I have been trying to figure out how to do this since getting my 16E. I
want to use my action button for a different need. I have searched everywhere
I can think of and have dug through all the shortcuts and actions but cannot
find a way to do this.

If anyone else can figure this out I sure would appreciate hearing about it.
I would even consider using a backtap gesture to toggle silent mode if that
can be done.
