Hello,
I would agree that Paprika is probably one of the better recipe apps out there for Voiceover users. They specifically made Voiceover improvements and you can either enter your own recipes in the app or you can save recipes from several dozen recipe sites directly into the app which works beautifully. You do this via the built-in web browser, after you find a recipe there will be a Save button at the end which puts everything into it's proper place in the app. As for other apps, I posted the below app review on February 10 as the app was free on that day. Given that there is quite a bit of interest in cooking and recipe apps whenever they are discussed, I was surprised that not a single person replied on or off-list with their thoughts about Cook Lebanese 101 Recipes which is the name of the app. This app is not a generic recipe app, it is specific and contains 101 recipes from the Lebanese cuisine, but those I looked at are very nice recipes and the nice thing is that the app has ver nice accessibility. Below one more time my review of "Lebanese For those who are interested in cooking/recipe apps, I was notified by the "App of the Day" app that this one is free today, normally it is $2.99. At first I was skeptical since quite a lot of the free apps I am notified about by the "App of the Day" app are games or not very interesting, but there is the rare good one and this seems to be one of these,. The app is called "Cook Lebanese 101 Recipes" and the developer is "shahiya.com" Below are links for the Canadian, US and UK app store followed by the app store description. But, since it's Sunday and I felt like being nice please feel free to read past that or search for "App Review" where I am giving a pretty complete description of the app. Canadian App Store Link: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/cook-lebanese-101-recipes/id443934198?mt=8 US App Store Link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cook-lebanese-101-recipes/id443934198?mt=8 UK App Store: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/cook-lebanese-101-recipes/id443934198?mt=8 Please note that I am not sure if this is free in all the app stores since I am not sure how App of the Day negotiates this. Requires iOS 3.0 or later. I had a quick look and was pleasantly surprised that the app seems to be entirely accessible. When you first open the app there is an "All Categories, dimmed button" at the top left. I believe it's dimmed because the opening screen shows all categories anyways. Underneath is a row of buttons which from left to right are labelled as follows: Cat 3 button, Cat 4 Button, Cat 5 Button and Cat 6 Button. Underneath this is another row of 4 buttons which are labelled more descriptively as follows: Salads Button, Soups Button, Vegetarian Button, Casseroles and Stews Button As far as I can tell "Cat 3" which is right above "Salads" brings up the list of salad recipes just the same as if you double tap on salads. The same goes for "Cat 4" and "Soups" etc. Below the row of categories and above the bottom row of tabs which I will describe next seems to be one recipe listed which appears to be a random choice of a recipe. This changes each time you go to a different tab or exit the app, it's basically a random suggestion. If it sounds interesting and you want to check it out just double tap on it and it opens. At the bottom above the home key are the following 5 tabs: Home Tab, 1 of 5: This is your main page with the recipe categories Search tab, 2 of 5: all you get here is a search edit field and the virtual keyboard. As you type a list of recipes appears, for example, I started typing "chick" and a bunch of recipes with the word "Chicken" and "chickpeas" populated the list. There is one unlabelled button which is just called "Button" and it appears to allow you to hide the keyboard because when you first go to the Search tab, you have the "search recipe name, text field" and the virtual keyboard comes on the screen. The tabs at the bottom like "Home, Search, Favorites etc. are hidden until you double tap that unlabelled button, at that point the virtual keyboard disappears and you can go back to the Home tab or Favorites tab. Favorites tab, 3 of 5: When I double tapped on it I was informed that "There are currently no recipes in your Favorites". It then went on to say "Use a button to save a recipe to your Favorites for easy access when you need it". I checked out the options when I opened a recipe and there is a clearly labelled "Add/Share" button in the top right of the screen of a recipe and it gives you the option to "Share by email" or "Add to Favorites". Photos tab, 4 of 5: I didn't go there for obvious reasons, but the name of the tab is clear enough. About tab, 5 of 5: This has a "Write a Review" link and just a blurb about the Shahiya.com website. This app seems to be very easy to use, I found everything I tried fully accessible and there are 101 very nice sounding recipes. If you open a recipe you have the "Back button" at the top left which takes you back to the Home screen and, as mentioned before, the "Add/Share button at the top right. If you swipe right you hear the recipe name followed by a bunch of information like difficulty level (easy, medium etc.), time to prepare the dish, calories per serving and how many people it serves. Here I noticed the information is read, but you have to use "Word navigation" if you want to hear it slowly and the labels like "Difficulty Level, Preparation and Serves are read at the end. Here is an example how Voiceover reads this, I am using a recipe for Sweet Toast and Milk Pudding: Sweet Toast and Milk Pudding, Medium, 50 minutes, 458, calories per serving, 12 persons, Difficulty Level, Preparation, Serves Lebanese Name, Aish el saraya After this if I swipe right is a "Button" which is unlabeled. I believe if you tap this it will open a photo of the dish. If I swipe right again I get "About this Recipe" and this follows by a description: A two-layer dessert, a layer of toast soaked in sugar sirup then topped with a layer of milk pudding and garnished with chopped pistachios. This is follows by "Ingredients" and here you can for the first time select "Line" navigation from the rotor (I assume it wasn't available before because the About part was just on one line) and if you do line navigation and flick down Voiceover will read the list of ingredients very nicely. Next comes "Cooking Method" and the same applies here, use Line navigation from the rotor and flick down or up to read line by line. After this is a "Write your Comment" button which allows you to add your own comment or comments. Last is "Nutrition Facts per Serving" and here again it gives you the 458 Calories per serving, some information about total amount of fat, amount of saturated fat,Cholesterol, Carbohydrates and Proteins. Here once again it seems to be all in 1 row and you have to turn the rotor back to words if you want to go through it slowly. Interestingly enough when I had Voiceover read all of it in one go it said a few times "24 underscores, 27 underscores, 27 underscores etc. When I went through it word by word it didn't say anything about underscores. That's it, after that you get back down into the bottom row of tabs. A few minor improvements could probably be made regarding how you can navigate the information in a recipe. But it's definitely all very accessible and seems like a fun little app. And, don't forget, grab it today and it's free, so you have nothing to lose and based on my recipe example above only a bit of fat to gain *smile* Enjoy, Sieghard -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the "VIPhone" Google Group.
