Hi Rob, I don't think this is meant to be used to learn a second language. I think it's a tool which allows you to maybe ask basic things if you are in a country where you don't speak the language. I am bilingual in German and English and I can definitely verify that especially if you tell it to translate a longer, more complex sentence you get some pretty interesting results. Sometimes they are funny and sometimes they are downright nonsense or change the meaning of what you said. It's not bad for short, straight forward sentences or questions, though.

What makes this translation app especially nice to use is the fact that your spoken phrase will be recognized and transcribed, and then the translated text will also be transcribed and spoken in the second language. The only thing that I would add is that the version of this app before the latest (3.0, 3.0.1, and 3.0.2) updates were released around Christmas time and after, was more accessible, so anyone who has this app with the previous version (e.g. 2.0.3 from July 24, 2012) should hold onto it, although the app is still quite usable. Here are the changes in the latest version: first, as before, there are two buttons for the selected primarly and secondary language at the bottom left and right corners of the screen. Instead of "Record English Speech" button, you'll just hear "English" button, or the equivalent for another language. In the previous version of the app you could flick to a "Begin text entry for English" button that would allow you to type your text entry for translation. The text entry buttons are still present as areas on the two large language buttons that sighted users can separately use -- they're just no longer announced to VoiceOver users. Instead, what you can do is flick to the conversation that you entered on the screen and double tap. This will bring up the spoken text with a "text field" announcement in the center of the screen, and you'll be able to delete the previous text (using the delete key) and send it off for translation by double tapping the "Send" key at the bottom right corner of your virtual keyboard. Note that if you want to escape this mode without typing or sending new text, you'll need to flick left to the "Bubble action close" button and double tap. Also, in the earlier versions if you double- tapped on one of the speech translation entries on screen you would get access to a series of menu items like "Star (to favorite)", "Speak", "Share", "Copy", and "Show more items" immediately associated with the text, with "Show more items" giving you access to "Delete" and "Edit" options. Now, if you double tap on a text entry, the text field itself shows up in the center of the screen. VoiceOver does not always correctly receive focus, so you may need to touch the center of the screen if this happens. Then, if you flick left, you'll hear in succssion the buttons for "Bubble action close", "Bubble action delete", "Bubble action play", "Bubble action share", and "Bubble action favorite". The close button gets you out of the text mode and returns you to the dialog screen, which is set out a bit like a text messaging screen. Play is like the "Speak" button that repeats the spoken text. Editing actions are performed by directly modifying text in the "bubble". The good features of this app are the simple entry for spoken text and access to the translated text in either language. (I can press the button to start speaking in either the primary language at the bottom left, or the one for the secondary language at the bottom right, and have my spoken text transcribed and translated from either of the two languages.) It's an inexpensive app, and supports large numbers of languages, including many non-European languages, with spoken voices. It does require an internet connection to use. You can also have the app repeat speaking the translated phrase, or your original spoken comment, and copy the transcribed or translated text to clipboard or to an email or text message. This is especially handy for languages that do not use Latin characters. Once again, this was simpler in the version before the recent last version upgrade, but it's still usable. If you want to translate much larger blocks of text at one time, and are more likely to type or copy and paste in text, you may want to use a different translation app. I'd probably use one of the iTranslate apps by Sonico GmbH. I have their older apps with multiple voices that no longer seems to be available in the app store, but I think their present free app should also work OK. (You'd just have to buy additional voices, or have the VoiceOver voice read out the translation.) They use the Loquendo voices, which I like. HTH.
