The Apple Maps data has been almost completely corrected since Apple's introduction of Apple Maps. Unless you have tried it recently, you are going on very old data. The errors were in the back-end, not on the iPhone, so Apple was able to fix, and continues to improve Apple Maps. Also, Apple Maps is using the same maps which TomTom uses. In my experience around NZ and in parts of Australia, Apple Maps works quite well.
